Dr. J. Michael Francis received his PhD in History from the University of Cambridge. Previously chair of the Department of History at the University of North Florida, in 2012 Dr. Francis was named the Hough Family Chair of Florida Studies at the University of South Florida, St. Petersburg. He is considered the preeminent international expert on colonial Latin America, Early Florida, Spanish Borderlands, the Pre-Columbian Americas, and Spanish Paleography. Dr. Francis has received more than two dozen national and international awards. Dr. Francis has been a Research Fellow at the American Museum of Natural History in New York and was named the Jay I. Kislak Fellow at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar appointed Dr. Francis to the St. Augustine 450th Commemoration Commission.
